What Is an Oral Biopsy?

An oral biopsy involves removing a small sample of tissue from the mouth for laboratory analysis. Dr. Natalia Homyak may recommend a biopsy after identifying a lesion, sore, lump, or discolored patch that does not heal within the expected timeframe, in order to determine the underlying cause.

When a Biopsy May Be Recommended

  • A sore or ulcer that hasn't healed within two weeks
  • A white or red patch on the gums, tongue, or inside of the cheek
  • An unexplained lump, thickening, or rough area in the mouth
  • Persistent numbness or pain in a localized area

What to Expect

Most oral biopsies are performed comfortably in-office using local anesthesia and take only a few minutes. The tissue sample is sent to a laboratory for evaluation, and Dr. Natalia Homyak will discuss the results with you and outline any next steps or treatment recommendations.
